running from a sub-domain

Asked by Brian McCarthy

I've got the standard domain.com setup, but want a 'notices.domain.com' to be running a mailman list.

This is within a cpanel installation of 2.xxx

I have created a cname for mail.notices.domain.com to go to 'mail.domain.com' (without it several links were not working)

However, is this the best approach to get the subdomain working?

I am also looking at having the html pages hosing at notice.domain.com (see other post relating to recomping .py files to include css headers).

I do have a few other mailing lists on the main 'domain.com' and would like to keep changes independent for the subdomain and main domain.

thanks

CNAMEs for mail servers are generally a bad idea. In order to be compliant as a recipient mail server, mail.notices.domain.com should have an A record or an MX record with a name that has an A record. You could set an MX for mail.notices.domain.com with name mail.domain.com. That would be better.

Also, CNAMEs can result in an outgoing MTA rewriting domains in mail headers. See the FAQ at <http://wiki.list.org/x/uYA9>.
