Monthly reminders still sent after list was deleted

Asked by Peter Chynoweth

I deleted a mailing list using the CPANEL interface provided by the hosting company. No sign of the mailing list exists. However, former subscribers to the list are still getting the monthly reminders that tell them they belong to the list (which does not exist) and reminding them of the password. Because there is no longer any list it is impossible to unsubscribe or make any changes to the settings for the list. Somewhere out there is a list of email addresses which is now effectively getting spammed every month!

Ideas?

Peter

The list still exists somewhere. Most likely on a server that used to host your domain before you moved it to your current server.

Look at the Received: headers in the password reminder mail to see where it is coming from.

Sometimes people move to a new hosting service and don't delete their list(s) on the old server before moving. Then DNS changes, and the old list effectively becomes inaccessible, but the installation still sends password reminders.

Can you help with this problem?
