lower limit on allowed DM mass in MadDM

Asked by Sreemanti

Hi,

I am using MadDM for studying dark matter annihilation near resonance and indirect detection. I am particularly interested in light dark matter, i.e., of mass range ~ 100 MeV-10 GeV.

I would like to know if there is any mass restriction on the lower limit of DM mass in MadDM. To be precise, can I safely use it to calculate the velocity averaged annihilation cross section into pions and kaons when DM mass is within the above range ?

Thanks !

Best regards,
Sreemanti

I assign tthis question to Jan.

I would say that they are no real limitation as long as your model is valid at such mass.
(in particular that your model does not have issue with perturbative theory linked to the strong coupling which might be in question at those scale obviously)

Additionally one might be carefull with the scale choice for the indirect detection since the default scale choice of madevent (if madevent mode is used) has a cut off at 4 GeV^2. But I think that for indirect detection the scale choice of madevent is set to another scale to avoid that issue.

Cheers,

Olivier

Hi,

Thanks a lot for the information. However, I read in the MadDM v.3.0 manual that for very light DM mass annihilating into SM particles, it is better to use the "reshuffling" option instead of the madevent option. In that case, how small one can choose the scale ?

Thanks.

Sreemanti

reshuffling mode is starting by a normal madevent mode where you can choose the scale as in madevent mode. This is then followed by a reshuffling/re-weighting staged to ensure the correct energy distribution (as explained in the paper).

Olivier
