The meaning of result

Asked by Charlie

Dear expert,

I use maddm to calculate direct detection, it gives me result like

sigmaN_SI_p : 1.32e-17 GeV^-2 = 5.13e-09 pb
sigmaN_SI_n : 2.11e-16 GeV^-2 = 8.23e-08 pb

Is this the dark matter - proton and dark matter-neutron cross section?
what if I want to know dark matter-nucleon cross section?

Best!
Charlie

Dear Charlie,

yes MadDM gives you the cross section on proton and neutron. MadDM doesn't provide the cross section DM-nucleon, as it already gives the quantities above, which are the meaningful physical parameters.
Looking at your model it seems that the interaction DM-proton and DM-neutron is very different, so I am not sure about the meaning of DM-nucleon. In any case if you want to define DM-nucleon, you can maybe obtaining it by averaging over your nucleus.

Hope this helps

Dear Chiara,

Thanks for your answer, It helps me a lot.
I am considering an isospin-violation model, so the cross section for DM-proton and DM-neutron is different.

I am also wonder is maddm use the formula

sigma_p=mu_p^2*f_p^2/Pi

to calculate the DM-Proton cross section, Because I calulate it this way and the result is different with maddm.

Best!

Dear CHarlie,

I think that all infos you need are in the MadDM v2 manual (arXiv:1505.04190) and in the maddm_card.dat.

best
