lubuntu 16.04 font size problems - restoring to settings used before upgrade

Asked by LEGOManiac

I've only just upgraded to 16.04 from 15.10 and discovered, once again, that the font sizes get all screwed up. Why it doesn't at least ask the user if they want to keep the desktop settings they had before is beyond me.

Anyway, after trying to change font sizes in all the usual places, it dawned on me to check the dpi size in xorg.conf.

There is no xorg.conf

What I found was:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1392 Nov 11 2015 xorg.conf.09152016
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1365 Sep 21 19:25 xorg.conf.09212016
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1372 Nov 10 2015 xorg.conf.11102015
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Sep 21 19:25 xorg.conf.nvidia-xconfig-original

One of which, the 09152016 version, had my original pre-upgrade settings in it.

I then went in search of wherever xorg.conf is currently hiding and didn't find it.

It turns out, one was never created, so X11 uses default values and/or whatever values it obtains from the monitor.

So, for my own record and the assistance of anyone else who upgrades from a previously tweaked system only to find out they have to start over, the solution was as simple as this:

sudo cp xorg.conf.09152016 xorg.conf

This restored my GUI to how I had it before.

On further examination, it restored almost everything, but the message list in kmail still doesn't respond to font size changes, but that's another question.
