42, which also happens to be the answer to life, the universe, and everything.

But, what is the question?

There are some that say that the question and answer cannot be known in the same universe; that if thise came to pass, the universe would instantly be replaced with something more improbable.

There are others that state that this has already happened.

Sorry people, but I have no idea how to ask a question on this board. I managed to get here purely by accident. In case anybody sees this, my question is why is my 6-year old Dell machine (XP, 40gb HD dunno what memory) hanging with a brown screen and the CD light working furiously, 30 minutes after I tried to boot from the downloaded CD. I didn't even get that far last night, the screen stayed black. I tried the safe mode start option twice, with no success.
As it happens, I also have a new Windows Vista box, and when I downloaded a CD for that, I managed to run Ubuntu and like what I saw. However, afterwards, I couldn't use that CD on my XP machine. So I made a new copy. Having failed with the XP machine, I went to write this message, and found that my Windows vista machine wouldn't start either with the Ubuntu CD or with it removed. I went to the boot settings, and changed it to take the hard disk first. I chose safe mode when asked, then shut down and restarted, and then went looking for a way to ost my question. I had to register on this notice board, but I couldn't find any way to ask a question. When I wnet to answers, I found this box, and started typing.
If you have read this far, perhaps you cdould reply to me at <email address hidden>, becuase I don't even know how to get back to where I am to view any answer on this message board! PS, I worked in IT for 7 years, so i am not a total idiot when it comes to setting up machines. If I am finding even this basic set-up so tedious, why would anyone go to all of the grief and time wasting, when windows comes pre-installed? I want to keep it simple!
Thanks,
Colm
