Connection to News Server is made even when idle

Asked by NiceBloke

Hi,

When my LottaNZB starts up it opens 8 connections to Giganews. It then just sits there waiting for nzb files to appear.

1] Why does it open the connection to the server before it finds nzb files?

2] Why is the connection kept open even when there is nothing to download?

My log file:

00:52:01 LottaNZB Starting LottaNZB 0.5.2...
00:52:01 LottaNZB Started HellaNZB daemon.
00:52:02 LottaNZB Connected to the HellaNZB daemon at localhost:8760.
00:52:03 HellaNZB hellanzb v0.13 (config = /home/username/.config/lottanzb/hellanzb.conf, daemonized, C yenc module)
00:52:03 HellaNZB (Default Server) Opening 8 connections...
00:52:03 HellaNZB hellanzb - Now monitoring queue...

Have I missed a setting somewhere? I don't want the connection open all the time, so I have to close LottaNZB when I'm not using it which kind of defeats the point of it sitting there listening.

Thanks.

Hi NiceBloke,

that's indeed a good question. Of course, the connections shouldn't be established until an NZB file is waiting to be downloaded. The problem is that LottaNZB doesn't actually download NZBs (and thus setting up the connections), but HellaNZB, our backend. In the past, we got quite a lot of feedback like yours with complaints about this and that in HellaNZB.

Unfortunately, the development of HellaNZB hasn't been active for years and this is not going to change in the future, so we cannot fix these things. That's why we're currently migrating to SABnzbd, which is actively being developed and offers more features than HellaNZB. However, I can't give you any date when LottaNZB 0.6 is expected to be released.

If having useless open connections really bothers you, you might want to give SABnzbd a try, because it probably does this right.

Stay tuned and I hope that you'll like the upcoming version of LottaNZB!

Can you help with this problem?
