Xorg high CPU usage for livewallpaper

Asked by DiFS

Hi,

First, I wish to congratulate you about the work. It works very well in ubuntu 12.10 amd 64. However, Xorg is consuming 50% of one CPU core. This happens only when the livewallpaper is ON. Compiz is consuming about 15% of one core of the CPU and also the livewallpaper programs. Are those values right?

I'm using:
model name : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz
NVIDIA Corporation GF116 [GeForce GTX 550 Ti] (rev a1)
Ubuntu 12.10 64bits

Hi,

On my system I am getting about 20 % CPU usage for compiz and livewallpaper. I am using the galaxy plugin with 12500 stars. So those values seem to be ok on your system (My CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-2630QM CPU @ 2.00GHz). But 50 % for Xorg is a little bit high (4 - 10 % on my system).

I got those values on Ubuntu 12.04 (amd64). So maybe the xorg version on Ubuntu 12.10 leads to this high CPU usage. I will check this and try to fix it.

Hi,

I tested in the livewallpaper-daily in ubuntu 12.04 64 bits and I got the same high CPU usage for xorg. However, the package compiz-livewallpaper-plugins works much better than livewallpaper-daily and it is consuming only 20% of the CPU for compiz and livewallpaper as you said. Have you had any plan to upgrade the compiz-livewallpaper-plugins package to the ubuntu 12.10?

Actually, I have no plans to upgrade the compiz-livewallpaper-plugins package to ubuntu 12.10 because this project replaces the compiz plugins.

The high cpu usage for xorg seems to be a bug of the livewallpaper or of anything related to xorg or OpenGL, so it is better if you create a bug report for this.

Hi,
I run Ubuntu 13.04 amd64, Intel i5 2500k, GTX460 with nouveau display driver.
The process Xorg consume between 5 and 20% CPU with the livewallpaper running, with the livewallpaper disable and also without the livewallpaper process on my system.
The Compiz process consumption seems not depends of the activity of the livewallpaper.
All I can notice on my system is that Nexus consumes few CPU usage and Galaxy consume many (85% CPU, with 500'000 stars, the maximum).

Can you help with this problem?
