Boot up from memory stick

I have an older computer with no CD drive and would like to install ubutu. It has a USB drive. I would like to down load just the boot up files onto a 4GB memory stick and then use that to boot up the older computer. I would then down load the full program once it is running from the memory stick. Any ideas?
