Gloria keep freezing

Asked by Micholus

Hello

First i want to tell you that i'm from Slovenia so i apologize for my poor english.

OK. I am new user of Linux Mint or i would rather say new in linux. I was trying a few Linux distros and i must say that linux mint (for me) is the greatest (a lot of supported software) and easiest to use from all other distros. I was so excited about linux mint that i had installed this wonderfull OS on my wife's IBM laptop. And works perfect there. So i decided to install linux mint gloria on my HP Pavilion and left Microsoft for good.
Now here is my problem started. Installation went perfectly good (i installed on brand new hard disk). Then i logged in, and setup my wifi network and when i tried to connect there was the first freeze. I had to do hard shutdown (on power button). I started again my laptop and after grub menu there was some BIOS bug (Timer not connected IO-APIC something), but linux have booted and i thought that this bug is some minor problem just to be ignored. Than i try to connect again and freeze is here. After 3 boot times i finally got connected. I said "Maybe gloria just need new updates/upgrades. So i decided to do so (with apt-get). And i must say that after updating gloria was working perfectly. So i thought. After an hour or more, when i was browsing on internet, the freeze was here. Again hard reset etc. I installed gloria 3 times (with different CDs). The results is the same. Gloria just keeps freezing after a time. So i created dualboot with xp that i could at least using my computer (and writing this).

Now i just wonder. Is this my hardware problem, or is this coused with that APIC bug (i even tried that F6 and noapic but its the same). Is this maybe some kernell/hardware conflict problem that cousing system freezing. Does someone else has the similar problem with HP Pavilion.

I was so excited going on Linux and now i'm again on windows. I hope that this is just a temporary system bug and that it will be fixed with the next updates/upgrades (i will keep going updating gloria).

HY

I don't know what happened but since i changed my desktop theme from default to some custom, the freezing problem stoped. So now i have a computer switched on for about three days without any problem. And i tried everything; downloading torrents with Deluge, watching movies, browsing with opera etc.

So far so good and i hope that it will stay this way.

I can finally use linux mint wooohooo!

Best regards

Few hours After i post my previous message, the freeze problem came back. So i decided to go to the bottom case of my problem.
And Now i, for sure, really know what was the source of my problem. After trying few other distros (some worked other did not - freeze problem) i wanted to know what the distros that worked and distros that didn't worked have in common.
The problem was Atheros wifi drivers ath5k. So after i changed wifi drivers module ath5k with madwifi ath_pci module, the problem was gone. And now for sure. Now even my LED light, on PCMCIA wifi card, is blinking.

So i hope that this info would be helpfull to someone with the same problem as i had.

Best wishes
Micholus
