xserver-common 2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10.3 crashes GUI

Asked by Coady Buckley

I've been running Mint 13 cinnamon/MATE for about a month with no trouble whatsoever (running with the proprietary ATI drivers installed via apt, not via debs). I have been using using graphics applications such GIMP and Inkscape without issue. Then, after I upgraded a number of upstream packages a few days ago, I am no longer able to use any graphics applications. The desktop environment immediately crashes when using both GIMP and Inkscape. The applications will open, but crash on a single mouse click, and the x-server kicks back to the login screen. The rest of the desktop seems to be functioning without issue, although I have not had time to test it extensively. It is also not confined to one desktop environment as the problem occurs in cinnamon, MATE and GNOME 2.

I had the idea that the package upgrades that caused the problem were related to "xserver" so I downgraded the following two packages:
xserver-common=2:1.11.4-0ubuntu1.3 => xserver-common=2:1.11.4-0ubuntu1
xserver-xorg-core=2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10.3 => xserver-xorg-core=2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10

I can confirm that the problem is not present after downgrading.
