how to use OpenID to subscribe to libravatar ?

On your description page, I read :
"Libravatar also supports things like OpenID. Not only can you login without creating a username and password, but you can also assign a photo to your OpenID identifier just like you assign photos to your email addresses."

However on the page for new subscription, there is no provision for OpenID. Do one input the OpenID in the username field ?

There is no link from the new account page (https://www.libravatar.org/account/new/) but if you look on the login page (https://www.libravatar.org/account/login/), there is a link which takes you here:

  https://www.libravatar.org/openid/login/

Your account will be automatically created on first login.
