how is libravatar supported by websites ?

Asked by mohican

Hi, I support your idea to have a decentralized global avatar service.
I understand that libravatar is new and still in developpement.

Questions :
Is libravatar supported by some websites ?
Does every site (webmaster) has to make modifications to support it ?
Will it be supported through CMS plug-ins ?
Is there a standardized format that will allow it to be supported directly ?
do sites that support Gravatar altough support Libravatar (format compatibility ?)

Libravatar is in use on several websites, including:

  https://reps.mozilla.org/
  http://2012.pycon-au.org/

and is part of a few Open Source projects/CMS:

  http://wiki.libravatar.org/libraries/#index2h1

In some cases, it requires that the admin enables an extra plugin, in others, it's automatically enabled and part of core.

Sites that support Gravatar can usually be modified to use Libravatar very quickly because the Libravatar API (http://wiki.libravatar.org/api/) is based on the Gravatar API (https://secure.gravatar.com/site/implement/).
