Is there any point to the "this attachment is a patch" checkbox in bug reports?

Asked by Xavier (Open ERP)

The checkbox doesn't seem to do anything apart from changing the icon next to the attachment to a little bandaid. No coloration, no setting the mime type to text/x-diff or anything. Is there any point to clicking that thing?

It allows us to search for bugs with patches attached, and for projects where most contributions come in as patches, this is a killer feature. The immanent release adds a badge to bugs with attached patches, so that they are easier to distinguish. We plan to do more with it in the future. For example, we want to turn patches into merge proposals.

1. Why couldn't the "patch" status be autodetected based on the file's mime type and/or the extension (.diff or .patch)?
2. How about adding a "patch view" with colored diff or something?

Can you help with this problem?
