AC_HAVE_GL fails on Lucid PPA but is successful on up to date Lucid installation

The automake function AC_HAVE_GL fails on the Lucid PPA. When attempting to determine the cause with an up to date local Lucid installation, the identical code works perfectly.

This is what I get on the PPA builder:

Your system fails at linking a small OpenGL application!
KPovModeler will not be compiled.
Check, if OpenGL and GLU are installed correctly on your system.
For more details about this problem, look at config.log after
the line "checking for GL".
