Comments play havoc with search results

Asked by Andropov Vladimirovich

I am not sure if we can post comments to bugs as guests. I have two email accounts, X and Y. I am registered on launchpad with the email address X. I posted some comments with my name and email address Y. Because I never registered with the email address Y, and those comments contain that email, then I probably posted them as a guest. Now here's my problem:

When I search my name on Google, the bug thread in which I posted comments plays real havoc with the search results. As a guest, I cannot remove those comments.

Its not only Launchpad where my comments appear. Numerous non launchpad websites have archived them. Even if I contact launchpad for removing the comments, how many other websites will I have to contact? Are there some websites officially registered with launchpad responsible for archiving bugs? What are they?

Only registered users can comment on bugs.

The only comments I can find for you are comments #44 and #55 in bug
#42160
, and neither contain an email address. Also, if search for
"Andropov Vladimirovich site:launchpad.net" on Google, I can't see any
sign of problems. Leaving out the "site:launchpad.net" part gives me
mostly results for historical figures.

In any case, we can remove comments but we are very reluctant to do so
because they form part of a public discussion. However, if you can
point us to exactly where the problem lies perhaps we can help in a
less invasive way?

We have no arrangements for bugs to be archived elsewhere. Comments on
bugs are emailed to subscribers, any of which may have archived those
emails and made them available to others. We are powerless to do
anything about this. In common with all public forums on the Internet,
there is no realistic way to completely redact anything once it has
been said, even though we can remove comments from our database.

Gavin.

Andropov Vladimirovich is not my real name and I did not post those comments with this name.

I am reluctant to post up my real name on any public places now. If you can direct me to a person who can take the responsibility to change the name on those comments, well and good.

I do not remember if I ever registered on launchpad with my email address Y. But believe me, I have been bombarded by follow up reply notifications on this address. Even the non launchpad websites show my email address Y and not X. Right now, I am logged in with email address X (which is my primary email).

I still don't really understand the problem.

The comments I mentioned - #44 and #45 in bug 42160 - are both
associated with your account, so they did come from you (or someone
with access to your account). The only name I can see mentioned is
Andropov Vladimirovich.

If you change your display name in Launchpad - at
https://launchpad.net/~andropovvladimirovich/+edit - then the name
displayed on any comments made in Launchpad will change too.

Are there other comments on Launchpad which were made by you but with
a different name?

I will ask the admins to remove your name from the first line of comment #40
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/42160/comments/40

That is the last personal reference to you as far as I can tell. LinuxForums.org and PC specifications are not personal information.

I hope you can agree with this compromise.
