If you want to file a bug on ubuntu/kubuntu package you can use apport-bug "package/application name" run from terminal. It'll collect all necesary information about your installed package and allow you to describe the bug. Hope this helps.

apport-bug xorg run from a terminal is useless.

The necessary information is gathered, however I can't describe the bug because the reporting procedure depends on xorg to be running, and on lucid 2-6-32-9 on intel video graphics it won't run. Black screen.

I fire up karmic on another partition, however apport-bug insists on gathering information on karmic which works, and there's no way to send in the apport report from the failing system.

This does not really help. Sometimes filing a bug manually is necessary -- like if there is a problem with networking.

one gets redirected to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs, and then there is then the url https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/PACKAGENAME/+filebug?no-redirect which displays:

Lost something?
There’s no page with this address in Launchpad.

this user friendliness seems to be the shuttleworth free new ubuntu :)

You need to replace PACKAGENAME in that URL with the name of the package against which you would like to file the bug as that page explains.

Alternatively, if you don't know the packagename yet, you can use https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+filebug/?no-redirect.

would it be possible to add this link on the bug page, and to re-add the new bug" button again please?

At the moment, as I understand it, there are no plans to change the bug-filing workflow for Ubuntu. Note that the current workflow has been developed specifically at the request of the Ubuntu QA team to try and drive down the number of bugs that are misfiled or filed without enough information.

would it be possible to improve duplicate detection instead by:
1. software / improved package selection
2. allow volunteers to do the triaging

the best protection against filing bugs seems to be good quality, and not a brick in front of filing bugs ;)

This question has been answered and bugs filed about any remaining issues. Debating the merits of the current bug filing work flow for Ubuntu in this question doesn't help anyone.

FWIW, I do sympathize with the complexity the current work flow adds to filing a bug, but in the end, it's not that hard. Run `ubuntu-bug $PACKNAME` or append `?no-redirect` to a package's +filebug URL. Yes, this requires a bit of manual URL hacking, but for the common case ubuntu-bug works well.

What is difficult for folks to work out is what package they should file a bug against. Once you know that, it really is fairly easy to file a bug, except for the exceptional cases which have bugs tracking them at this point.
