Why we're using Google maps for profile location?

Asked by Alex Chmyr

Maybe it would be better if Location widget will be based on OpenStreetMap ? Any pros/cons?

Interesting. Yeah, I've been intrigued by OpenStreetMaps for a while but I haven't actually seen it used in anything big before. It would be kind of cool to see an example of it “in the wild”.

Zearin, it is really cool using that data for first because it free, so as an example you can do as described here

 http://developers.cloudmade.com/projects/web-maps-lite/examples/map-markers

it is quite simply and don't take lot of efforts.

Launchpad uses Google maps because OSM did not have the level of data to show developers in many parts of the work. Google Maps cannot be automatically tested and is costly. Switching to OSM is an option if the community can provide a replacement. I created a blueprint to track the issue. There is also a bug
