new launchpad is a pain

Asked by Tom

Hi the beta testing of the new launchpad is going really badly this time.

I can't click to get back to the root of the Ubuntu section by using either the logo nor the word "Ubuntu", i think the rest of those links work the same but i haven't tried most of them.

Crucially the

Edit question - Project - Distribution - Package - Choose

is even more clunky than before! It looks very nice but looks like it must be even heavier than the previous system. Also when i typed in "apt" it gave the response "too many packages" and when i made that "apt-get" to be more specific it really freaked out at me.

Given that this filing system is already too specific and practically unusable except in certain cases i would really rather the time was spent in developing something that might actually help rather than hinder us in answering questions! There have been a number of bug-reports posted about making Launchpad easier for people trying to answer questions and it would be nicer to see those issues addressed rather than just trying to make the thing prettier. Thanks for trying tho

Regards from
Tom :)

Tom, I quite agree with you, the "edge" version is nicer...
I tried editing a question (this one actually), and editing the package to "apt-get" as you mention and... well... I admit that the new search box is much more "pretty"... but is as useful as a deranged monkey with a can of gas in the middle of a fire... =)

Maybe the whole package-question paradigm is wrong... It seems like a very good for bugs, or (as you posted) some VERY specific questions, but in general questions posted here are more about applications, and general configurations, rather than particular packages.

I'm not quite sure what the correct procedure to ask for new functionalities is (because it's not technically a bug... maybe a blueprint=?). Do you?

At any rate, at least some progress is been done (may be not in this particular area... but in launchpad itself), lets hope if we all scream together someone will listen. I'm not a developer and I don't know how difficult it is to make this kind of things happen, nor if it's us who are completely mad asking for this, but I've been reading some of the "3 wishes for launchpad" list and this doesn't look so far fetched, in fact compared to some of the posts it seems almost mundane.

Another thing that would be nice is to be able to edit the answer rather the question...

Being able to edit questions is a bug-report that did at least get some discussion. It would be tricky and might introduce some extra complexities. If you can find the bug-report it's quite interesting. Well, i enjoyed it ;)

I am interested in the "3 wishes for launchpad" please post me a link to that in here or somewhere i might find it ;) lol, thanks Frederico.

I think the package filing should be reduced down to very simple basics such as "networking", "sound", "installing Ubuntu", "hardware problem" and just about maybe 5 more things. Keeping It Simple to at least file things to somewhere quickly initially rather than having to leave so many blank for a developer to spend time filing properly.

I've found the bug report you mentioned, It seems quite interesting (the time threshold to "undo" an answer would be a very nice feature=)

Heres the link for top 3 wishes for launchpad, for the 4.0 version...

https://lists.launchpad.net/launchpad-users/msg05247.html

It's a 58 (for now) post long thread so it's quite interesting. =)

Cheers!

I'm marking this as "answered" since there is a bug report and there's not much more we can do from the question.

Cheers,
