Terminal stuck in configuration mode

Asked by Robert Collard

Used sudo apt-get install for new version of Sun java-6. Terminal got to the configuration page with the information and license agreement below it and stayed there for more than an hour. I get messages whentrying toupdate or getinto Synaptic Pkg Manager as follows: Unable to get exclusive lock
This usually means that another package management application (like apt-get or aptitude) is already running. Please close that application first.
How can I break out of this? I cannot get back to the configuration page to let it run if it is going to. I'm stuck. tried exit and restarted computer. Now I'm at an impasse.

Problem solved the hard way, or the easy way, depending on point of view. I reinstalled Kubuntu 9.04 with live CD. Sorry guys, couldn't wait for an answer.
