GPG Key

Asked by c4man

I used these commands -chris@Compaq-Laptop:~$ gpg --fingerprint
gpg: keyring `/home/chris/.gnupg/pubring.gpg' created
gpg: /home/chris/.gnupg/trustdb.gpg: trustdb created
chris@Compaq-Laptop:~$ GPG
bash: GPG: command not found
chris@Compaq-Laptop:~$ gpg
gpg: keyring `/home/chris/.gnupg/secring.gpg' created
gpg: Go ahead and type your message ...

How do I get it to display-- Retrieving the key in Ubuntu

Open a terminal and enter:

gpg --fingerprint

GPG will display a message similar to:

pub 1024D/12345678 2007-01-26
Key fingerprint = 0464 39CD 2486 190A 2C5A 0739 0E68 04DC 16E7 CB72
Geoffrey Hayes (My OpenPGP key) <email address hidden>
sub 2048g/ABCDEF12 2007-01-26

so I can get my key fingerprint?

Finally got the key now the problem is can not upload to server see below

chris@Compaq-Laptop:/$ gpg --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --send-keys
chris@Compaq-Laptop:/$ sudo gpg --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --send-keys
gpg: WARNING: unsafe ownership on configuration file `/home/chris/.gnupg/gpg.conf'
chris@Compaq-Laptop:/$

chris@Compaq-Laptop:/$ gpg --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --send-keys
chris@Compaq-Laptop:/$ sudo gpg --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --send-keys
gpg: WARNING: unsafe ownership on configuration file `/home/chris/.gnupg/gpg.conf'
chris@Compaq-Laptop:/$

The way I read this is that nothing is being done by not seeing any messages showing action by the system.

You have to use the fingerprint instead of "send-keys"
like this:
chris@Compaq-Laptop:/$ gpg --send-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 12345678

this will solve your problem.other wise go to the following link
https://help.launchpad.net/YourAccount/ImportingYourPGPKey?action=show&redirect=ImportingYourOpenPGPKey#Importing%20your%20key%20into%20Launchpad

for any other query,please tell.

Got it see below-

root@Compaq-Laptop:/home/chris# sudo gpg --send-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 6B2E734A
gpg: sending key 6B2E734A to hkp server keyserver.ubuntu.com
root@Compaq-Laptop:/home/chris#

Will now enter fingerprint so can import key.

Thnx

you wrote "I entered my email address in PGP"

Instead of entering your email in there enter the Key ID.

It's quite possible you don't have Evolution set up with your key just yet. Please take a look at the Evolution section of https://help.launchpad.net/ReadingOpenPgpMail

Am I supposed to be able to read it in the email or do I cut/paste in gedit then decrypt?

You have to decrypt this msg and then you will get a link where you will confirm about PGP keys.

c4man,

I'm afraid Evolution is not configured correctly as you claim, otherwise it would be able to access your secret key and decrypt the message.

Let's do a test:

1. Copy this encrypted text to a file:

{{{

2. then run `gpg --decrypt <file>`

Let us know what it says.

hi

Just install FireGPG plugin for your mozilla firefox browser.

Then select your PGP message, right click it and go to decrypt. It will ask for your key you entered at the time of creating the key, enter that and you will get your decrypted text. Then follow the instructions and it will be done.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask c4man for more information if necessary.
