Getting started on asklib

Asked by C.W.Holeman II

What I did:
---------------

I placed asklib into launchpad and including the .pot and a Polish .po file. I requested automatic handling for the pot and po files from bzr. Earlier I imported asklib_polish.po which I have replaced
with catalogs/asklib_pl_PL_utf8.po in bzr. I have been able to execute my test code with it using English or Polish.

What it did:
-----------------

https://translations.launchpad.net/asklib/1.0/+imports

Displays this list:

> catalogs/asklib.pot in AskLib - Text based C++ class library 1.0 series
>Uploaded by Ask Library (C++) on 2009-07-07 16:40:18 PDT
>Will be imported into Template "asklib" in AskLib - Text based C++ class library 1.0

What I expected:
-------------------------

1) I expected there to be some directions on how to make asklib_polish.po just go away.

2) I expected to be able to figure out what to do next with the pot and po files that are listed which I have not be able to do.

1) Change the status choice to something other than all.

2) I'm not sure if you are suggesting that the UI is confusing if you, you may want to file a bug
Have you read https://help.launchpad.net/Translations which is the help link on the
   Translations overview page https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/asklib/1.0
The polish PO file needs review before it will be imported. I'll ask a Translations team member to look at it.

1) That explains my misunderstanding.

2) As described I created asklib and placed the source code, the pot and a po file it into launchpad and need to know what to do next.

"polish PO file needs review before it will be imported" to be reviewed by whom and to be imported to where? The documentation seems to provide info for someone to translate given an established project.

I am not a translator. I am trying to establish a project that will be able to work in many languages but the guidance seems to be directed to someone who already has a clue. I am trying to figure out what the next step(s) are. Also, need to know when I have gotten there, wherever there is.

What is the relationship of this to the https://translations.launchpad.net/asklib/1.0/+imports page
which shows the template and a Polish translation?

The help page that is intended for new projects is found here:
https://help.launchpad.net/Translations/YourProject
It also links to these pages:
https://help.launchpad.net/Translations/ImportPolicy
https://help.launchpad.net/Translations/ImportingFromBazaarBranches
Please let us know if you find that information unclear, so we can improve the documentation.

https://translations.launchpad.net/asklib/1.0 now shows the template that was successfully imported. You could simply start translating there.

https://translations.launchpad.net/asklib/1.0/+imports is the status of the import queue and it shows that the template (catalogs/asklib.pot) has been imported. The Polish translation (catalogs/asklib_pl_PL_utf8.po) still needs a review and if you read the help pages you will find that this is because it should really be called catalogs/pl.po to be automatically reviewed and approved.

Since the import queue can find and show the missed-named catalogs/asklib_pl_PL_utf8.po then it would help if it was flagged as being a problem.

On the naming of the .po file (catalogs/asklib_pl_PL_utf8.po) remove "asklib_" and "_PL". What about the "_utf8"? Could a project have both UTF-8 and ISO-8859-2? If so, how would the files be named?

Well, you can simply a "needs review" status a problem if it does not go away. Usually these are picked up by our staff within a few days and then commented on the exact problem - or simply approved.

No, Launchpad supports only one file per language. The encoding is mentioned in the headers of the po files. I think UTF-8 is widely available these days so it's a fairly safe bet.

Can you help with this problem?
