importing and updates

Asked by Damien Elmes

Hi,

I'm new to the translation service and am trying to understand how everything works together.

I notice that when new translations are imported (via bzr or a file upload), they are first approved, and then the number of translated strings appears to grow over time, indicating that it takes some time for the files to be fully imported, and the this appears to happen not just on the initial import, but on subsequent updates to the file. What happens if a user is editing strings as a file is being re-imported? Assuming the user is not editing strings that have changed in the uploaded po file, will the updates be merged correctly?

One other question - I gather once I've uploaded an updated version of the template file, all of the translations are automatically updated based on that new template. Is this a fast process or a slow process like the initial import of the translations? After uploading an updated template, how can I be sure it's safe to export the .po files with confidence they'll reflect the updated template?

Thanks for the help.

sorry, one more question: unless I'm imagining things, when an updated translation is uploaded, the translation count is reset to 0 and slowly builds up again. This leaves a window where visitors may look at the page and think that all translations are missing (and may attempt to start translating strings which may already be translated). Am I missing something here?

Hi,

If the original string in the .POT file are unchanged, then the translations will be automaticaly imported into the updated version. If not, then you hit a bug :)

The Launchpad Translations import time depends on the system load, and how many other project are importing new/updated templates.

As a rule of thumb, one day should be ok, but you can check the import queue for the status of all .pot and .po files for you project.
Also, as far as I know, after each importe/update of a .pot file the project maintainer/driver will get a notification email.

Cheers,

Thanks for the answer. Is it safe to say that when the imported email arrives, all the translations have been updated then?

How about the 0 strings translated period? I may have posted that just before you posted your answer.

Yes, I guest that the notification email is sent just after all translations were imported. If not, then it should be a bug.

If before update the translated string count was X, and the after the update, for an Y ammount of time the count is set to 0, I guest you hit a low priority bug that is worth reporting :)

Cheers,

In most cases, it shouldn't take more than a few minutes for a file to
be imported. Sometimes, when there are a lot of requests to be
processed, it will take more than that.

Yes, they will. For those that have been modified by someone else at
about the same time, either translations from PO file, or the ones
people are working on in the web page, will be saved as suggestions, and
a user will be notified about them.

That is a fairly fast process, and as soon as a template is marked as
'Imported' in the import queue, you should be able to request an export
of updated PO files.
