Need backups of mailman mailing lists (config and mbox)

Asked by Faustin

Hi!
We are moving away from Launchpad for our mailing lists and I will need the backup of those ML to be able to import them in the new mailman instance.

Basically for every ML I will need a way to get those files:
- config.pck
- list-name.mbox

Any other format for the list of member would of course do (csv, json) as I understood that you have a modified version of mailman and the users management is maybe different from a standard mailman instance.

Can you please help me, I did not find any documentation on how to do that.

Regards,
Faustin Lammler

Hi Faustin, can you provide the list of mailing lists for which you need a backup?

HI! (writing as an actual admin of the lists)

Here are the lists:
- maria-discuss
- maria-docs
- maria-developers

But we would need to synchronize since I need to communicate with the members before the move, maria-docs is a low traffic ML and is probably a good candidate for the first move.

I would appreciate if you have any recommendation for that migration (automated response message, how to disable the list etc.).

Regards,
Faustin (for MariaDB Foundation)

Hi Guruprasad!
Do you think you could help with my request or point me to the correct person at Canonical?

I have requested our IT team to help with this. https://portal.admin.canonical.com/C156972/ is the ticket (this is only for our reference).

Hi @Guruprasad, do you think that you could escalate this.
It's now almost one month that I am waiting for it to be able to migrate our mailing lists...

Hi Faustin, I apologize for the delay and I will escalate this. Since most of the engineering teams are at an engineering sprint, it is likely that there will be no progress on this in this week. I'll let you know once I have an update.

Hi Faustin, it is going to take our IT team more time to get to your request and I do not have an ETA at this point. I'm very sorry about the delays but there is not much we, the Launchpad team, can do about it. This definitely not the experience we want our users to have. I will post an update once there is some progress.

Hi @Guruprasad,
I understand that this does not depend on you but please let me know if this is ever going to happen.

If not, I'll have to communicate publicly about it and ask to every user to move to our new mailing list system.
I'd really like to avoid it but we can not wait longer for this to happen.

Thanks for your help.
Faustin

Hi Faustin,

I've assembled the requested files into the archive available at https://people.canonical.com/~cmisare/launchpad-questions-706084.tgz.gpg .

You should shortly be receiving an emaill to the primary email associated with your Launchpad account with details about how to decrypt the data.

Please let us know once you've successfully confirmed the data is as expected.

Thanks.
