build gdk-pixbuf-xlib i386 for focal

Asked by Taha Nouibat

In order to make gnome-40 in focal, I ported gdk-pixbuf-xlib. This package gdk-pixbuf-xlib is not exist yet in ubuntu 20.04 focal.
I need to build i386 for the gdk-pixbuf-xlib packages to fix the unmet dependency for my gnome-40 repository. This is not possible right now, but i386 is allowed in ubuntu 21.04 and newer .

Why do you say that i386 is allowed in Ubuntu 21.04 and newer? That's not my understanding - as of 20.04 i386 is only provided for limited compatibility purposes (see https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/community-process-for-32-bit-compatibility/12598), and this has not been reversed in more recent Ubuntu releases.

If you're building a new thing for focal, you should not build it for i386. If you still think you need this package for i386, could you please go into more detail as to why?

To be more clear, libgdk-pixbuf-xlib exist only in ubuntu 21.04 and newer and i386 is allowed for this package.
(see https://packages.ubuntu.com/impish/libgdk-pixbuf-xlib-2.0-0).
In ubuntu 20.04 LTS, I can't build for i386 because it is not available and this issue prevent me from fixing the libgdk-pixbuf unmet dependency.

This has already been discussed in https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/i386-packages-in-launchpad-ppas/15367
See especially the comment from mc3man in Jun '20.
