git speed is amazingly slow or hanging/failing

OCI container builds are failing mostly (eg. https://launchpad.net/~cloud-images-release-managers/cloud-images/+oci/ubuntu-base/+recipe/20.04/+build/1786, https://launchpad.net/~cloud-images-release-managers/cloud-images/+oci/ubuntu-base/+recipe/20.04/+build/1790, ... ) while waiting for "git clone".
Another common problem (happens at least ~weekly I would say) is "fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly" (see eg. https://launchpadlibrarian.net/547098947/buildlog_oci_ubuntu_bionic_armhf_21.04_BUILDING.txt.gz).

Building containers on top of this unreliable infrastructure is pretty hard. Is there anything that could be done to make git interaction a) faster and b) more reliable?

We're at the limits of what we can do with our current infrastructure, but we're in the process of redeploying the git service to PS5 in order to address this kind of problem.
