My account got renamed to append "-disabled", and I can't rename it back because the username is "in use" even though the profile page for that account returns a 404

Asked by Aaron C. de Bruyn

My account got renamed to append "-disabled", and I can't rename it back because the username is "in use" even though the profile page for that account returns a 404. Additionally, renaming my account required me to delete my (admittedly old) PPAs even though somehow it got renamed to -disabled without deleting my PPAs. Can I get my username back please?

Hi Aaron

I don't see the "-disabled" flag appended to your account name, did you manage to rename it yourself ? If not can you please provide more details so we can help ?

I deleted all my PPAs and then tried to rename myself and it failed because 'darkpixel' is no longer available.
I settled on 'darkpixel2k' for the moment, but I'd really like to go back to what I have been using since ~2005ish.

I just tried to rename myself again, and it says it's still in use.

Hi,

I'm afraid that username has been registered in our user management site (login.ubuntu.com). This reserves the username on launchpad.
We can't do anything about that as it has been validly registered by another user since your account was deactivated.
Sorry,
Tom

I can't tell you how much I appreciate Ubuntu renaming my account so someone else could 'steal' the username I've been using for over two decades.
