Username change

Asked by Jeffrey hathaway

I have used the username Rootdet for many years (over 15) and tried to change it here on launchpad after setting up an account.

It told me this error message:

The name 'rootdet' has been blocked by the Launchpad administrators. Contact Launchpad Support if you want to use this name.

I have occasionally ran into issues where noone likes names to begin with "root" and is supect that is the issue ere as well.

That's correct - there's a number of things like "root" and "admin" that we blacklist, to mitigate potential confusion or abuse. Unfortunately there's not functionality to add per-user exceptions to that, but also we try not to make such exceptions due to the work involved in managing them - apologies!

I understand blacklisting "root" and "admin" but why "rootdfsdgfsadjh"? I don't see any potential confusion there. Heck I have username rootkea on gmail, gitlab, github and almost everywhere.

Only other site which has problem with username like root<foobar> which I know of is yandex.ru and now launchpad.net.

I honestly don't think there is anything to gain by enforcing this policy.

Thanks!
