Disabling translations for the Gnome Subtitles project

Asked by Pedro Castro

Hi,

The Gnome Subtitles project (gnome-subtitles) currently has translations enabled, however this became a second translation repository as the Gnome Translation Project (GTP) repository was already being used. This has resulted in duplicate translations, together with merging conflicts and several GTP translators have expressed their dislike for a second repository.

That said, is it possible to disable translations for this project? If not, what are the alternatives?

You have the possibility to deactivate that yourself through the "Change details" link on your projects home page. Simply de-select "Translations for this project are done in Launchpad".

BUT this is not the only solution. The problem you describe is quite common as there are many projects that have translation tools elsewhere. However, you could stilll choose to use Launchpad for translations, just as you would use any other tool for editing po files. The key is to provide those translations back to the upstream project regularly to avoid the double work you describe. Also you should coordinate with the upstream team about style guides and translation standards, like GNOME has them.

So, take a moment to think about that before deactivating translations in Launchpad.

Is there any reason why you are not using "GNOME Translators" group as the translation group for gnome-subtitles? Doing that and setting it to 'Restricted' would make it possible for GNOME translators (they are the only ones allowed into GNOME Translators group in Launchpad) to use Launchpad as a web-based PO editor, and upload their changes manually (just like they'd do now anyway).

Данило Шеган,

As I said, the major concern regarding this issue comes exactly from the GTP. They don't manage translations in Launchpad, so having a second repository is against their policies.
