GCC compile error in PPA build, but not in local sbuild chroot

Asked by Saikrishna Arcot

In my Chromium Beta and Dev PPAs (https://launchpad.net/~saiarcot895/+archive/ubuntu/chromium-beta and https://launchpad.net/~saiarcot895/+archive/ubuntu/chromium-dev) the build for amd64 reliably (repeatedly) fails when building for 16.10 and 17.04. The error appears to be GCC having an internal error when compiling one specific file. However, I tried reproducing the crash in my local sbuild chroot, but was unable to do so.

Something I noticed while the file was compiling was that about 1.6 GB of memory was being used by gcc. Could it be that the builders don't allow this much memory?
