Use Rosetta as dictionary/phrasebook

Asked by Jonas Häggqvist

Is it possible to use Rosetta to look up words/phrases when doing translation work for projects that don't fit into, or don't use Rosetta?

Only by using the search functionality, which isn't ideal for this sort of thing.

Hi Jonas,

Can you give an example for your use case, or what exactly are you trying to do?
Maybe we can find a workaround.

Kindest regards,
Adi

Sorry for not getting back to you.

I help manage translations for Rockbox (http://rockbox.org). Due to partly technical and partly historical reasons, Rockbox uses a custom translation file format, so we can't use Rosetta directly. My hope was to be able to use Rosetta manually to look up words/phrases when translating for Rockbox.

The same could be done for other projects that don't use Rosetta of course.

Basicaly you would like to use Rosetta as a translation memory server? I don't think tha Rosetta has decent support for translation memory.

Maybe you could convert the rockbox file to po format and the translate using Rosetta.

This is a common practice for translating xml files.

I took a quick look over the rockbox lang format and if you already have a parser for that file format it should be easy to generate a po file. I can help you with just (just drop me an email)

For custom translation memory you can also use this tool: http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/toolkit/tmserver
or you can try to use this site http://open-tran.eu/ (useful, but with lot of noise)

Can you help with this problem?
