Quick start guide for bazaar code hosting in launchpad

Asked by Matthew Turner

Hi I have just registered a project with launchpad and would like to host my code on the launchpad website. I have hit a few problems using the system which are preventing me from doing this and have got a number of suggestions as to how launchpad can be improved. The first one regards to location of the help section, it would be great if there were more prominent links to the help section from the various parts of launchpad as I found it not obvious that a help section even existed at first.

The help topics for the code control section are also not well written and are hard to follow ( I would try and re write these but it would be like the blind leading the blind). A number of examples of problems I experienced when following one of the tutorials ( which can be found at: https://help.launchpad.net/Code/UploadingABranch ) include the The "create your own Bazaar branch" link which links to a page titled "Code/FindingAndDownloading". When the instructions are run on the page mentioned above I get the error "bzr: ERROR: Not a branch: "/home/matthew/"".

As a suggestion, it would be great if there was a quick start guide to using bazaar clearly linked from the code section of launchpad for both the command line and Olive.

I am a Ubuntu user and think that it is an amazing operating system, keep up the good work,

Regards,

Matt

Hi Matt,

I work on the Launchpad team and one of my main jobs is to provide help text, documentation, etc.

I'm pleased to say that I'm working on a quick-start guide for Launchpad Code this week, which will compliment the Code section of the user guide.

I'm disappointed to read that you found the Code section of the user guide hard to follow and poorly written. Perhaps we could talk on IRC or elsewhere to discuss that in more detail. My email address is <email address hidden>.

Thanks,

Matthew.

Hi Matthew,

Thank you for the quick reply and apologies on the lateness of mine. I would be more than happy to help if the offer is still there. Although not completely new to the idea of code storage (having used a CVS for a project at university), my knowledge of Bazaar is none and would be more than happy to try out the tutorials and provide feedback for you.

Regards,

Matt

Should we keep this question open? Perhaps we should create a bug for the specific issues raised here, or perhaps Matthew has already addressed Matt's concerns?

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Matthew Turner for more information if necessary.
