What is inappropriate content?

Asked by elims

I'm courious about the exact definition of inappropriate content on launchpad. I couldn't find any substantial informations on the website so far. What is offensive content in your eyes?

RE: What is offensive content in your eyes?

"Offensive" content depends entirely upon the audience.
(What is offensive in one country, may be totally acceptable elsewhere)
(What is offensive to one individual, may be totally acceptable to another)

But to start the Ball Rolling, and in the context of where we are.
I will brave an answer to this question with a starting suggestion that it would include:

Internationally understood and recognised illegal online situations like:
1. Cyberstalking or harassment
2. Internet fraud
3. Dangerous and illegal activities, such as bomb-making, terrorism, or unlicensed trade in weapons
4, Physical threats
5. Hate crimes, such as advocating genocide
6. Hacking: illegally breaking into individual computers or computer networks
7: etc

The only "inappropriate content", losely defined that covers everyone on the planet, is that which is defined in these International Laws/Treaties. Not to say that they are effective, or that every single person agrees with them, or even that they offend us, but they are the Law.

Beyond this anything else, is simply a perception in the eye of the beholder(s), and could be determined as a form of Custom(ised) Censorship.

BUT If you really wanted to push me to go further into defining what might generally be perceived as "Offensive Content" then spam (junk email), privacy violations, adult pornography, hateful content, and the spreading of malware/trojans (For Example: Trojan.Win32.Diamin.js, Trojan-Downloader.VBS.Small.ca, Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Delf.acc, Trojan-Dropper.Win32.Agent.bfd, and Trojan.JS.Cardst,1,1)

I hope this stimulates some lively debate

Regards
ikms

Well, thats what i thougth it would be. Let's leave that clear cases out and focus on the grey in the middle.

I'm planing to use this platform for the development of an open source synthesizer software. The focus of this synthesizer is not on producing audio streams, but merely to utilize the soundcard as a signal generator for external hardware. On a first glance this is well within the white part. But, on a second glance one of the possible uses of this software could be considered as offensive since it is of sexual natur. This is not pornograpy at all. It's like using your soundcard as an oscilloscope, only the other way around.

I wanna avoid the situation where I invest a great amount of time into the development on this platform only to found the project deleted one day because it is considerd as inappropriated.

Hi elims,

As an analogy, image or video editing software can be used to make pornography but clearly Launchpad would not have a problem hosting such software. Similarly, I can't see an issue with your software under your "one possible use" scenario. As long as your artwork and descriptions are not offensive there is no problem with the fact others may deploy your software as described.

Brad
