Whıle unmounted specimens are best for the purposes of examination ,dried material tends to be very brittle and susceptible to damage.however ,properly prepared and well cared for mounted herbarium specimens will last indefinetely.
İt is therefore essential to select mounting paper ,adhesives etc. Of archival quality.the two main aims of the mounting process are:
