How do you reinstall Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS on a dual-boot machine with Windows XP. The computer works fine but I would like to know what my recovery options are. Thank you.

If you want to reinstall you may follow the steps that you had done for installation. The only difference you will see ext3 and swap partitiond when you choose manual partitioning at the installation. Installing will install all the files from scratch and the files will be overwritten.

If you have already have the grub menu and see the menu that enables you choose OS, there is already a recovery option there that enables you login as root to the console. So you may try to fix things there without reinstalling. Ang another solution is instead of reinstalling using the live cd to mount your ext3 partition. By using the chroot command you can log in to your bash at that partiton and again do some fixes.

I am an Ubuntu Gnu/Linux newbie. I understand the first part of your answer about reinstalling the same way that you installed in the first place. When you choose manual partitioning you will see the Windows NTFS (main) partition and the Emachines FAT recovery partition and also the ext3 (main Ubuntu partition) and its swap partition also. From here I do not understand and could use very specific instructions (ie step 1 , step 2, step 3 etc). Please include very specific steps and I should be OK. What do I do with the manual partitioning screen that shows these partitions?

The second part of your answer is too advanced for me at this stage of my learning the operating system :)

At the manual partitioning screen just chooce the ext3 partiton and mount it as /
If you also mark it as formatted then the partiton will be formatted.

Then just proceed.
