Ulster-Scots (or Scots; Ulster) missing from language list

Asked by A Gordon

In the language select there is no option for Ulster-Scots, is it possible for it to be added?

Unfortunately it's not currently possible because Ulster Scots doesn't have its own ISO 639 code, which we use to construct URLs for pages related to that language and so we can't do without it. It appears that ISO 639 currently has it down as a dialect of Scots (see e.g. http://www-01.sil.org/iso639-3/codes.asp and https://www.ethnologue.com/language/sco), so it comes under https://translations.launchpad.net/+languages/sco.

I'm aware that the question of whether Ulster Scots is a dialect of Scots or an independent language is a controversial one (I'm from Belfast myself, as it happens ...). But Launchpad isn't in a position to take its own view about the language/dialect question, and we leave that up to the ISO 639 registration authorities. If Ulster Scots at some point gets an independent language code, we'll be happy to add it, but not until then.
