Launchpad hosting closed-source app?

Asked by alecwh

Hello,

I'm curious if it is possible to host a closed-source application on Launchpad. Two questions: (a) is this possible, and (b) how much it would cost (if any). Thanks!

Hi alecwh,

Yes closed-source projects can now be hosted on Launchpad by purchasing a one-year subscription for US$250/project (+ applicable VAT if in the EU).

The subscription allows your projects to use the same features of Launchpad as an open source project would. One aspect you should be aware is that code hosted on Launchpad will be publicly accessible. So if you're hosting a closed-source project I suspect you will not want to use the code hosting features. Also be aware that any place in Launchpad where your project is displayed it will be clearly marked as "Proprietary".

To get started, simply register your project in Launchpad and select 'Other/propritary' as the license and give a brief (or lengthy) description of that license. As a project owner, the overview page for the project will show give you instructions on how to buy a voucher which you can then redeem to subscribe your project.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance or if you have additional questions.

Best,

How about an open source project that either depends on or can work with some closed source supporting software? Is it permitted to host downloads of those closed source support libraries on Launchpad alongside the open source project for convenience? How about hosting a combined installer that contains a build of the open source project as well as some closed source modules?

If yes, then is it for free or for a fee?
