"unstable" does not exist in Ubuntu, it's a Debian series.

Just remove "unstable" from your changelog (debian/changelog) and it should work.

Thanks for answering Udara madubhashana....what i write down into changelog file replaced by ''unstable'' ??

hello (2.8-2) unstable; urgency=low

  * Use `dpkg-buildflags` instead of $(shell dpkg-buildflags).
    Otherwise "export DEB_BUILD_MAINT_OPTIONS=foo", when needed, does not work.

You need a Section field in the first paragraph of debian/control. See the Debian policy manual for details.

I have this same problem. I've been looking here:
https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/developers-reference/ch05.en.html#distribution

but the package I'm trying to build isn't for stable or security.
Does anyone have a complete list of possible values for distroseries section of changelog?

Also, this seems to be a very common problem.
Just came from this question:
https://answers.launchpad.net/launchpad/+question/169630
Maybe there's a better way to get information to users about how to build debian packages?

Can you help with this problem?
