Add new language, Latgalian

Asked by Marlau

Hello!
Please add Latgalian to Ubuntu translation list.
I am a speaker of Latgalian and I want to start translate Ubuntu Linux in Latgalian.
Is it possible to give language code for Latgalian: lv@latgalian ?
Plural form is similar to Latvian.

Officially this language is regarded as a variant of Latvian. The Latgalian written language is acknowledged as a "historical form of the Latvian language" and state support to its preservation and development has been declared (Section 3, par. 4 of the State Language Law).

This is problematic: we don't really support "@" variants right now. There is an ISO 639-2 covering this language, but that's for uncoded languages in the whole Baltic language group.

So your best bet would be to request an ISO 639-3 code first. I'm told this is not very difficult.

I had requested a ISO 639-3 code LTG for Latgalian in January!!! Now is June. I have no answer.
I'm waiting and waiting...
Can you make unofficial LTG in Ubuntu list?

I'm very sorry; I'm not surprised that ISO procedures take some time. But making up our own language codes in Launchpad would cause problems if eventually those codes are assigned to other languages. Perhaps there is something we could do to support "local" language codes, but even that would take time to set up.

Can you help with this problem?
