Replying on mailing list thread

Asked by Cesar Herrera

I'm interested in ubuntu-phone list. I use the web http://<email address hidden>
I don't want to receive in my email a lot of messages.
I wanted to know how to answer to a thread not being subscribed.
Thanks,
Cesar

You can send messages to a Launchpad mailing list you're not subscribed to as long as you're a Launchpad user "in good standing" for mailing list postings; otherwise they're held for moderation.

The "good standing" bit is a little awkward. You can achieve it automatically by having held postings manually approved to at least three different Launchpad mailing lists, but that's rather weird. If you really want to do this then it probably makes sense to start by posting reasonable messages that make it through moderation, and then ask us to override your mailing list standing manually.

Constructing the right message headers for a reply is also quite cumbersome if you don't actually have it in a normal mail user agent. What in principle you can do is pick out the message-id from "view source" on the mail-archive.com message page (it's in a "msgid" hidden form field), and then manually add an "In-Reply-To: <THAT-MESSAGE-ID>" header to the message you're writing, if your mailer lets you do that, and of course an appropriate Subject header starting with "Re: ". It's always going to be fiddly this way, though.

Have you considered just subscribing to the list and filtering it instead, which would have neither of these problems? All Launchpad mailing list messages have the standard List-Id header, so it should be quite easy to filter them.

I'm ussing a web mail. If I subscribe the list, how can I answer a tread?
And if I have filtered the list?

If you subscribe to the list, you can just answer it directly (and make sure that you send your reply to <email address hidden>, if your web mail system doesn't notice the List-Post header).

If you filter it, I'm assuming that you filter it into some mailbox other than your inbox rather than into oblivion, in which case you can go to that mailbox and answer it directly as above.
