looks like I'll need to remove the project to create the group:

Can you handle that or do I need to figure out how to revert my prior work?

It looks like the URL was not changed from https://launchpad.net/fd.io/ to https://launchpad.net/project-fd.io/, though the name was changed from fd.io to project-fd.io. If it would be easier to just delete it and start over, I'm okay with that.

https://launchpad.net/fd.io is now a project group; I've renamed the old project to https://launchpad.net/project-fd.io.

You can add projects to the new project group by setting the "Part of" field on a project's "Change details" page.
