when an issue status is changed to Incomplete, and I provide the requested information, how do I notify the developers of the change ?

Asked by Jerome Lacoste

I've reported an issue some days ago. Someone, I guess an ubuntu developer, marked it as incomplete and asked me some questions. I answered them the best I could and proposed my help. I've answered 10 days ago. The issue is still in incomplete state.

How do I know if
* the developer didn't read my messages. I should maybe ping the issue again ?
* the developer read my information but finds it insufficient
* ?

FYI I've used Atlassian's support. They use a specific Jira workflow for their support activities: Jira is configured to allow one to change the issue status when a user answers a question or adds more information. Same when a developer asks something. So issues go from state 'user needs to add more info' to 'support needs to provide more help' states. That makes it easy for everybody to know the current status: the support team easily identifies issues with more info and users know somebody is going to take care of their issues. Maybe something like that should be implemented in launchpad.

For info, the issue I am trying to get feedback for is:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/203297

Hi Jerome,

I've gone ahead and posted a response to your bug - 203297. As I mentioned there, it's a constant battle keeping up with bug reports and responding in a timely fashion. We obviously appreciate your patience and help. I just wanted to respond to you here as well.

Typically it's best to let the developer or bug triager manage the status of bug reports. However, in the case where it seems the bug has sat in an Incomplete state for a period of time and the requested information has been provided, I think it is appropriate if you go ahead and flip the status back to Confirmed. Likewise, if you know you bug has been resolved, go ahead and mark it as such. This won't help you know if someone has looked at your response but at least it reflects the bug is no longer Incomplete. However, usually once a developer/triager reviews an Incomplete report which has provided the requested information you should get some sort of feedback be it a comment or the status/importance/assignee being updated.

If you have any question regarding a bug report you have filed, many developers and triagers hang out on #ubuntu-bugs on Freenode. Feel free to pop in and ask someone to take a look at your report. They should be able to help you with any questions you may have.

I hope that helped. Please do not feel like we don't care about the bugs you report, we really do appreciate it. It's people like yourself that help us make Ubuntu even better.

Can you help with this problem?
