Please increase size of team-mayhem/multishell

Asked by fidian

I am building multiple versions of shells (one binary per version). I'm almost done with Bash and would like to publish 4.3.x but will run out of space. After that I will tackle other common shells. The goal is to use these binaries for automated testing of shell scripts. One can add the PPA to a docker container, for example, then run a test script against any version of a shell.

Could you please increase the size of the PPA if you think that this is a worthy cause?

Is there more information I should provide? Perhaps this request has fallen through the cracks?

I would love to receive any feedback regarding this ticket.

Is there really enough differentiation between the minor revisions to justify keeping them all around?

There are bugfixes, of course. Typically the patches are quite small and don't impact many things, but they are different versions of bash. It is possible to write shell scripts that would work for a while and then mysteriously fail after a version patches some affected code. If an example of this type would help, I can create such a script.

The goal of the project is to create these multiple versions of shells in order to help people find problems, similar to what you can do with 3v4l.org running PHP in multiple versions of PHP. It is my hope that I can get a special "shell" builder for Travis CI where you can run scripts with different shell versions.

As for the reason for all dot releases, I have found that on routers, embedded machines, and older systems I am unable to update that there's weird versions of bash. I found it impossible to predict what I would find, but at least this way I can verify a script's output against any version of Bash (excluding version 1).

It is really worth checking out 3v4l.org to see why the versions could be important.

I have two additional requests, if you do not mind:

If my request is denied, would you advise me as to the best two or three options that other teams employ when they run out of space?

Also, it is weird but I am not able to find this ticket in the bug system. Is search working?

I've increased that PPA's quota.

You won't find this question in the Bugs section, but in the Answers section.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask fidian for more information if necessary.
