Why is there such a long wait between a change, and an email update about it?

Asked by Wise Melon

I have noticed that if I (or anyone else) make a change to a bug report, answer, anything else that will send an email notification to somebody about it, that they email notification is always delayed by at least a few minutes. Why is this?

Bug emails aren't sent immediately, but instead batched up and combined over a five minute window. For example, if I close a bug and then spend a couple of minutes writing a comment that explains why, the bug's subscribers will receive a single email telling them both that I closed it and my rationale.

The five minute delay certainly makes rapid IM-like conversations in bugs difficult, but they're very rare. It's a balance between delaying communications and causing too much noise, but I'm happy to consider any suggestions for improvement you might have.
