registering OpenSolaris on Launchpad

Asked by Jan Hlodan

To whom it may concern,

We are the Globalisation team of Open Solaris and we are searching for possibilities of translations. We want to make an access for the wider community to make the translations easier and faster.

We really like you project but we would like to ask you a few question about the registration Open Solaris on Launchpad.

1.
Two kinds of source repositories are hosted at opensolaris.org: centralized and distributed.
The centralized source management model uses the Subversion (SVN) source control management program.
Repositories managed in a distributed fashion use the Mercurial source control management program.
The question is if Launchpad can handle with Mercurial repositories? If not, are you planning it in future?

2.
Is it possible to convert .po-.mo files? And is Launchpad able to handle with Sun's .po files, .java files and .html? Will you able to support XLIFF files in the future?

Thank you for your answer.
Best regards,

Jan Hlodan

I hope this answer covers the translations-related part of your question:

You can import PO files, and export both PO and MO. If there is anything unusual in Sun's PO files that we need to handle, please let us know. Otherwise, the import will tell. (I assume you received my email about the imports; your introduction here answers it).

As for Java and HTML files: the Translations application is not tied to the Code application, so you'll still need to extract your translatable messages on your end (as I believe you have already done), even if you also keep the source files in Launchpad.

XLIFF is definitely on our wishlist, but not in the planning stages yet. We are first working to complete support for one other complex format.

Hello,
little more detailed description of differences in Sun's .PO and GNU's .PO files can be found here: http://www.genunix.org/wiki/index.php/OpenSolaris_I18n_%26_L10n_Community_SketchPad/Pootle
We're evaluating Pootle as one of alternatives for Community OpenSolaris translation. Also would like to try launchpad and see what it can do and how usable it would be for us.
As it was written in first message, OS.o l10n messages are available through Mercurial repository. This repository contains couple of file formats ( Sun's .PO files, .HTML, .PROPERTIES, .JAVA) As we were evaluating Pootle, this application comes also with "translation toolkit" which includes conversion tools for conversion between various file formats. So, our question is whether launchpad has also any kind of conversion tools and is able to automate whole sync & conversion process.
Thank you for answer.

Could you please release just one SUN's PO file? We wonder to know how Launchpad manages with it.
For example this one:
SUNW_OST_OSCMD.po in OpenSolaris.org Series: trunk
Uploaded by Jan Hlodan on 2008-03-14 00:06:24 CET
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/12655310/SUNW_OST_OSCMD.po

Thank you.

The production server is not for tire-kicking, but I imported a number of templates on a demo server. I used staging.launchpad.net; it gets restored to a copy of production every day but if you look there today and set the "uses Launchpad for translations" flag in the project properties you can see how it worked out. If you want to try things out for a longer period, you can also upload to edge.launchpad.net, and we can run the import scripts manually when you need it.

Several problems came up with your files:

 * Most files appear to be templates, but their names end in .po which is meant for translations. I had to correct these manually.

 * SUNW_OST_OSCMD_part12.po wasn't really a template. It seems to be a Czech translation, but nothing in the file name hints at this. It's no problem for us (we can import a translation and generate a template on the fly), but I mention it because it might point at a mistake somewhere.

 * Duplicate msgids in SUNW_OST_OSCMD_part12.po. This is clearly a mistake in the PO file, though we'd expect other tools to detect it. We do support msgctxt (gettext contexts) for disambiguating identical strings, so using that would allow you to circumvent this problem.

 * Several files contained no header. It's not hard to insert one; we use the header's information during import to determine whether a subsequent upload is outdated, and whether a change in the uploaded file clashes with a change made in Launchpad in the mean time.

 * The html.po files I looked at all just contained one string about not having access permissions.

A completely different question: have you considered registering OpenSolaris.org in Launchpad as a distribution instead of as a project? Or is this just the kernel and libc etc?

Thank you very much for answer and cooperation.
I presented the Launchoad to my colleagues yesterday.
We will answer shortly.
