License violation in ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/misc

Asked by David F.

ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/misc distributes binary TrueCrypt packages compiled from source, which violates the TrueCrypt License 3.0 under which the source code is distributed. The license allows redistribution only unmodified or under a different name. These packages should therefore be removed or the repository marked private.

Ok, I accept it.

Excuse me please, but it's simply laughable.

I'll remove TrueCrypt.

Best regards

Yes, I find the TrueCrypt License laughable too, but it's the right of the creator. You could repackage it under a new name (both internally and externally). I think some of the TrueCrypt forks allow you to redistribute modified versions under their name. That would relieve you of replacing the name everywhere yourself.

I think some I guess an "alternatives" link from /usr/bin/truecrypt to whatever you choose to name it would be OK. I'm no lawyer, but I've seen similar patterns for other applications with a similar license.
