System Fails to shutdown/halt

I have an Acer TravelMate 2410 laptop with 2Gb of RAM on which I have installed 14.04. Previously on version 13.10 it would shutdown correctly, but following a new install of 14.04 (not upgrade) it appears to shutdown, but the system is not halted even with 'shutdown -h now' in terminal.

I have read previous answers re altering Grub with acpi=force, but this has had no effect. I have downloaded the Intel Linux driver and that also has no effect. There does not appear to be any settings in BIOS that could help solve the problem.

Any help would be appriciated.
