Have you contacted the existing maintainer (https://launchpad.net/~devel-irasnyder)? They were active relatively recently, so we won't steal the project from them without good reason.

Hello William,

thanks for pointing that our. I must have missed that. I will contact Ira and ask.

I think there is some confusion here. I think Lanoxx wants to assume maintainership of the tilda package in Ubuntu, which lp:tilda is not. It is a project that is hosted on Sourceforge, and which has a branch import set up on Launchpad. It is the upstream project.

Lanoxx, you don't need to do anything to assume maintainership of the package of tilda shipped in Ubuntu, if you are already maintaining the package in Debian, as the Ubuntu package is currently simply synchronized from the Debian repositories.

If you want to take over maintainership of the *upstream* project, you need to contact the project owner on Sourceforge or github (where the code is actually hosted), and discuss such options with them.

Hi Rodney,

not exactly. But your explanations show perfectly why I want to take over the launchpad project:

First, the sourceforge page is dead since 2009. The actual upstream package was moved to http://github.com/tsloughter/tilda a long time ago, but Tristan stopped developing on tilda long time ago. I took over development of tilda around 2011 and thus the current upstream source of tilda is actually github.com/lanoxx/tilda. All the links pointing to source forge only contain outdates information from around 2009.

Second, bugs against tilda in launchpad are files against the tilda project, so it is natural to assume that the tilda package and tilda project are somehow connected.

Third, the 'Upstream packaging' feature of launchpad links the ubuntu packages to the launchpad tilda project. I am so far unsure why sense that make, since the package is actually synched from debian.

Last but not least I would like to mention that Ubuntu 13.10 currently ships tilda 1.1.8 but in the meantime I have released three bug fix releases which contain small but useful bug fixes. As these are only bugfixes the should qualify for SRU but nobody on the Ubuntu side seems to be aware of this. I was hoping that by taking over the tilda launchpad project, I could update the upstream link and make it easier for Ubuntu devs to sync my bug fix releases. I'm not sure if that would be possible, tough.

Cheers
Lanoxx

To SRU the package from debian, I think you need to request a sync from debian to Ubuntu 13.10. Note that 13.10 will only have 3 more months of support anyway, so an SRU might not be especially prudent, as Ubuntu 13.10 will soon be EOL. Tilda 1.1.11-1 is the version currently in 14.04, which will be released tomorrow, and anyone running 13.10 should upgrade to.

I've updated the branch import location, so the upstream branch will at least have the right code.

The bugs should probably be moved to the package instead of the upstream project on Launchpad (unless of course your intention is also to use Launchpad to manage your project), and filed as issues on github if you plan to use github to manage the project. Then, bug reporting against the upstream project on Launchpad could be disabled (unless of course you want to use LP to manage things).

You should also probably contact the project owner on Sourceforge and see if you can take ownership of it there, so that you can update the information, or delete it as necessary.

The "upstream link" on the Ubuntu packages is just to provide a link to to the code in the upstream project on LP, but is not necessary, or always accurate, particularly in the case of imported branches for projects not managed on LP. It should be possible to unset them if you prefer.

I released 1.1.12 a few days ago and it seems that 14.04 is not synching automatically just as 13.10. I am willing to develop tilda and maintain the package in Debian, but I am not going to make SRU requests each time I release a bug fix in Debian. But I am getting mails from Ubuntu users that are asking me, why my bug fixes don't land in Ubuntu...
