ppa: amd64 build: Unrecognized character in at /home/buildd/.sbuildrc

Build of a package uploaded to PPA succeeds for i386 but fails for for amd64 on "menkib (QEMU'd ARM test builder)" with the following error:

Unrecognized character \x08 at /home/buildd/.sbuildrc line 4.
Compilation failed in require at /usr/bin/sbuild line 488.
cat: build-progress: No such file or directory

What could this error be due to?

One of our builders had a corrupt configuration file. I've removed that builder from the pool and retried the affected builds.
