packages in ppa deleted... but not really

When I delete packages from the ppa launchpad interface it deletes them (kinda) it still says they are taking up space and when i upload a different package with dput that has the same version number as a package recently deleted it tells me that the package is rejected. How long does it take for the packages to actually be purged from the ppa system?
